Underwhelmed

In light of hearing the entire Mindcrime album, I was excited to go this time. I have had tickets to see them in the past and never got to the shows. Bass was almost inaudible, the guitars were set at the same level for every song, and the drums tended to overpower. I love North Mississippi Allstars... anyway, the first 5 albums. Despite the many mics on stage, there was little in the way of back vocals. Geoff Tate is not hitting all the notes album style; although he is still an amazing vocalist. They had a blonde come out and sing on Suite Sister Mary--good vocal. The band should shoulder some of that: the acoustics were bad, a lot of resonant noise bouncing. They did a great job at performance: Rudy Sarzo was fun to watch as always. The drummer did a 7-minute solo... 2 of those minutes were without sticks. Disappointing that they only played songs off Empire and MindCrime... no Rage, no Warning, no EP. Show, sound, effect, couldn't put my finger on it. Loved that they played the entire album; I always liked that about this band. He's good for sure, long solos bore me, but people who like them will be impressed--the guy has chops. I am interested to see how the other North Mississippi Allstars does in light of this show. I was always a big fan of Tate's vocals, but if they are going to strip all of the flavor and dynamics out of the songs, I'm going to see how the other guys fare without him.
